It’s a fact these days that the Baby Boom generation — which consists of those born between 1945 and 1964 — is getting older as each year passes by. And more people within that age group are finding that all of the crazy stunts they pulled when they were younger is beginning to affect how they feel physically, though they don’t let possible health problems impact housework, as a matter of fact.

And this phenomenon — in which they continue to accept that aging doesn’t mean slowing down — is actually a positive sign, for it is the person who gives in to minor aches and pains that begins to age the most. Even those who may need knee or hip replacements, or who just have leg arthritis — trying hard not to let such problems affect their ability to get around the house.

Of course, none of this means that we are soon going to be inundated with hordes of helpless Baby Boomers or cripples over the next few years. For one, there’s almost no Boomer with any self-respect who would ever admit that a minor ache or pain is going to stop him from doing anything. This is good, because just a little bit of exercise, some weight loss and pain relief can really help.

For example, it can become very easy to let housework slide if someone’s looking at their Dyson upright vacuum cleaner — to use a popular housework tool — and is also feeling a twinge or two in their knees, hips and ankles. However, those pains can be managed with a little bit of attention to not only pain relief but also weight loss and exercise of a certain type.

Therefore, never look at any age as being the time to go and sit in a rocker out on the porch, soaking up the sunshine but eventually rusting out, which is really what aging is. Even if there are minor aches and pains, it’s far more important to keep moving in one way or another. Whenever one begins to slow down one begins to ‘rust, ‘ so keep that in mind above all else.

However, if the thought of powering around the house vacuuming like a mad hamster isn’t exactly one’s cup of tea, think about maybe picking up gardening once more. Out in the garage are probably a couple of garden vacuums that can be used to not only get the garden shipshape but also the body. Think about Clint Eastwood; who’s now 79 and still vigorous as all get out, if you need motivation.

What people need to keep in mind with all of this is that sitting on the couch all day or convincing one’s self that growing old means slowing down greatly just isn’t the way to go. Keep an active life with a positive outlook and there’ll be no end to the ability to go about keeping the housework going even in the face of health problems, for a fact.

Garden ornaments

There is nothing more exciting than knowing you own a unique, rare antique that has a strong sense of personality. No matter what antique you might own, whether it’s an old sofa, a compilation of antique coffee tables or a yen for an antique side table, the best part about purchasing antiques is the act of hunting for them. With the options available today, an online discovery of your dream antique coffee table is not an altogether unlikely event. You will simply have to approach your search with a full understanding of what you want to find; conduct some thorough searches online for that specific piece, and look into a website carefully to see if they have the antique sofa you want so much. Brilliant would be the ability to locate a site that not only had what you wanted but featured a collective of garden ornaments, garden antiques, antique desks and antique bookcases. Really, isn’t the whole idea to be surrounded by tasteful and exquisite antiques? Antiques that bring a certain air of “je ne sais quoi” to your home? Naturally you do; no antique collector is ever more satisfied than when basking in the ambiance of the treasures from a era long gone. Each antique has a marvelous tale to tell. Finding a site that also includes bespoke items, limited edition, contemporary and modern items alongside antique chairs, antique desks and antique sofas will provide you will a well rounded choice. The best possible situation would be to keep all possible choices at your disposal to meet whatever your interest or desire of the moment.

That leads us to the observation that many people who just admire antiques for their history perhaps don’t realize that they are truly a smart acquisition for your home. Antique coffee tables, antique sofas, antique desks and other such items not only hold their value, but if well cared for, will increase in value for the possibility of future re-sale. Antique side tables and sofas are timeless, elegant and should never be underestimated for their potential value. Forego purchasing Repo items which don’t hold their value; sites offering such should probably be bypassed altogether. “You get what you pay for” is not just an adage but is true in this case.

Choose a site that has these qualities: a large number of dealers offering quality items; professional web presentation of available inventory; items available in a wide range of prices, from a few pounds sterling to thousands of pounds. Check to see if the site also allows private members to sell as well. Finding a site offering well-designed and stylish antique coffee tables, antique sofas and antique chairs, as well as a wide variety of modern items, in a wide range of prices with several buying options will allow you to satisfy your passion.

There is no gardener who doesn’t have at least one gardening book in the house. Books are a great source of inspiration, while they also work well for reference, regardless of whether you just want to improve knowledge or you seek for specific content. And the choice of one gardening book or another says it all about what raises your interest in such an activity.

the gardening book

The American Hort. Society’s A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants is one great example of a very complete gardening book that could answer almost any question you may have related to plants. The downside of such a publication is the very scientific content presentation, since most readers will prefer something accessible to the average user rather than complex and difficult to understand. Hence it is a good idea to read some reviews, check the content and leaf the gardening book before buying it.

Get a very easy gardening book if you are just learning the secrets of this occupation, and do not go into very complex information about fertilizing, soil varieties and plant species. Many amateur gardeners start with a bed or two and do their apprenticeship at a reduced scale. Only skills and experience can support a large garden. Then, you will know when to read a more advanced gardening book to move to the next level.

gardening books

Look for those publications with a decent photo coverage because you need details on seeds, roots, flowers and leaves. This is why we need to insist on the importance of previewing a book before purchasing it. Online orders may be tricky from this point of view, as you check little from one or two reviews. A serious gardening book is not always what you need; sometimes a simple notebook will be enough. It all depends on the task.

gardening book

Detailed book categories are available in the gardening sections of bookstores. And online retailers follow the same system. There are some in the basic categories and then, others in specialized classes: garden design, cultivation of perennials and annuals, soil preparation, hydroponics, aeroponics, greenhouse gardening and much more. You can get an idea about a certain gardening book by leafing through it before the actual purchase. Certain materials are more extensive than others covering from 100 plants to 1,500+ species.

Growing tomatoes is an art. In fact in some neighborhoods, even a status symbol. Getting it right is not always easy and many theories have been propounded about the best methods to use. Hopefully my many years experience in the gardening and nursery industry may help to offer the best advice according to yours truly.

GETTING THE SOIL RIGHT

Tomato plants love food and water. They are quite greedy plants. Start the soil work at least two weeks before planting by turning it over, then add composted waste, aged chicken or cow manure and turn it over again. Try to avoid sheep manure as they often pass undigested seeds. This could lead to unwanted crops of just about anything they have eaten. You should know prepare the garden bed into furrows and mounds. Eventually, tomatoes will be planted on mounds.

Some of the most common indoor herbs:
• Basil: Easy herb to grow from seed both indoors or outside. Requires the sunniest position.
• Thyme: Thrives well in the dry, indoor air but needs a lot of sunlight
• Parsley: A slow grower but needs very little sunlight
• Oregano: Needs a lot of light but has a variety of uses.
• Bay: Grows well indoors yearlong. Prefers filtered sun and rich soil in a cool place
• Sage: Likes direct sun
• Rosemary: Needs ample sunlight and is sensitive to over watering. A delicious and beautiful herb

PLANTING

Nearly all tomatoes need staking, so get some 6' hardwood stakes and set them along the mounds about six feet apart, one after the other. Next to each one of these stakes, plant a tomato seedling. Water in well when finished. As the tomato grows you will need to use the stake and some twine (or flexible cording), to support and hold the plant upright. Do not “choke or damage plants by tying too tight.

Different plants require different amount of sunlight. Some of them need direct sunlight and some may not survive in the hot sun. If you are planting a plant with multiple colors, you may need to expose it to direct sunlight. Begonias, for instance, need sunlight to bloom, but too much sunlight may dry them. If you are keeping the potted plant indoor, just make sure you bring them outside from time to time, or use suitable light bulb to help plant growth.

For those of you who cannot spend too much time looking after your plant, but for some reasons you are keen to keep some potted plants, look out for the types that does not require too much attention. You may consider to adopt cacti or dracaena fragrans (also known as corn tree) since they do not require too much maintenance. And they can be planted in pots

If you would like to get the greatest results from your flower beds or veg garden, mixing in compost with your land is really a good strategy. The most inexpensive way to get compost is to make your own!

When getting started off with composting, one of the first decisions that will have to be made is what kind of compost bin you’ll use. There are several different sorts of compost bins that you are able to choose from, based on your preferences, the amount of area you’ve accessible for composting and your price range.

The primary element that all compost bins have in common is they should have the ability to hold warmth so that they can allow the elements to compost correctly. In many ways, compost bins perform like ovens. The only difference is that in addition to keeping heat, compost bins should also have the ability to retain dampness as well. While it is very possible to compost utilizing a mound rather than a compost bin, the advantage to using a compost pin is they help to make every thing look nice and neat. Additionally, compost bins can help to contain the odours which are sometimes associated with composting.

One particular mistake that a lot of people make when composting is choosing to use a wooden fence or some other framework as a sidewall for composting. The problem with this is the process of active composting will eventually decay the framework in addition to discoloring paint and rotting timber that has not been treated. As a result, you ought to use only compost bins that are built from plastic or metal. This will assist to stop corrosion and rust from happening.

You will need to choose from an enclosed compost bin or an open sided compost bin. The benefit to enclosed compost bins is they do usually hold wetness as well as heat much better than open sided compost bins. The drawback is that they are also typically more compact. Because of the fact that enclosed compost bins keep the moisture and heat much better, they also tend to allow the elements to decompose more quickly. Open sided compost bins are larger and hold more material but due to the fact they operate slower, they may not compost as much material over time as an enclosed compost bin.

The size of your area may also determine which type of compost bin you select. Enclosed compost bins often perform much better in small yards while open sided compost bins will not work so effectively in smaller gardens.

Drinking herbal tea is a wonderfully delightful pleasure for me because it has no caffeine, no tannin, no calories; it tastes delicious and is pretty inexpensive. If drinking tea does not come to you naturally, you can quickly begin a daily routine of tea drinking by adding it your breakfast or early morning snack.

People have been brewing herbs to cure ailments for centuries. Each plant has its own special properties. While some can help with stress, others can wake you up. One plant can ease a queasy stomach while still other herbs can ease your mind.

Whether it’s summer iced tea or hot tea, by growing a bed or two of your your favorite tea herbs, you’ll have enough yummy tea to make it either way.

Aromatic herbal teas are easy to make directly from your herb garden. Pluck off a few leaves from your favorite tea herb like chamomile, peppermint, spearmint or fennel and you are all set.

When you get ready to make your tea, use a generous teaspoon of dried herbs for each cup of tea. If you’re making a pot of tea add one teaspoon per cup (plus use an additional teaspoon for better results).

If you are making your tea with fresh herbs, you will need to use 2 to 3 teaspoons for each cup because the fresh herbs are not as concentrated as the dried herbs.

Make your own custom tea mix from different herbs, which I think is better than just using one. Try lemon verbena or calendula with your chamomile for an extra tart taste.

You can use any of these herb plants in your teas:

Beebalm: Although beebalm is a part of the mint family, it has a light, citrus aroma that reminds me of oranges. This plant, which was first brewed by Native Americans in Canada, is also known as Oswego tea and is believed to aid with an upset stomach, soothe a cough and sore throat, ease menstrual cramps and end flatulence and nausea.

Hibiscus: Try the rose mallow kind of the beautiful hibiscus herb in your next herbal tea for an extra special of citrus. There is also the marsh mallow kind (think marshmallow in flavor). This particular variety can assist you with your sore throat or benefit you if you are prone to ulcers. Regardless of the type of hibiscus plant you use in your tea, the petals are all you need.

Lemon Verbena: If you love lemon like I enjoy lemon, then you’ll love lemon verbena, which has the scent and flavor of lemon whether you brew fresh or dried in your hot or iced tea. This is a really good herb to brew with your green tea, which make it much more enjoyable.

Rosehip: The hip of the rose herb has been thought to be among the most important herbs around because of its high vitamin C content. The high vitamin C content is most likely the reason why they usually help with cold and flu prevention.

I also suggest that you brew fennel, elderflower or German chamomile in your next home-brewed cup of tea.

Did I mention that you can put your dried tea herbs into a pretty, little container and give it as a gift? Who wouldn’t like to get a gift like that? And even better, it’s easy on your budget!

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

You can start your own herb garden by heading out to your local greenhouse, nursery or home improvement store to purchase them. Another way to get started with your herb garden would be to germinate your plants from seeds. Those are all good and well, but a third option, called propagation is cheaper than buying your plants or growing them from seeds.

Propagation is simply finding a friend or neighbor who already has herbs and then taking either part of their plant through division or by taking a cutting of their herb and growing roots for before planting it.

Division works just like it sounds: you take an existing plant and divide it into smaller plants.. You can easily do this with a clump of chives or thyme. Use your shovel to separate the herb all the way down through the roots. Some spreading plants, like English chamomile, are not as hard as others.

You do not have to use a shovel; you can take a couple of regular forks and use them and your hands to separate the plant. If you water the herb the day before, the soil will be good and moist and ready for division. Next, all you do is replant the part you divided just like an herb that you’d buy at the market.

Another thing that is different is that you’re going to want to fertilize the new little herb when you put it into its new home. above and beyond the fertilizer, I’d advise you use a root stimulator to help those recently cut off roots to grow back.

If you are not very happy about getting your hands dirty, you can make a cutting of the existing herb instead. Just keep in mind that your cuttings won’t have any roots and cannot be planted in the ground or in a pot until it does, which could take several weeks.. Not all herbs respond very well to cuttings, so do your homework before you get out your garden scissors.

New, immature plants are easier to get cuttings from than the older, woodier herbs . But like I always hear; make do with what you have. When making a cutting, follow these guidelines:

Look for a branch that has at least 3 leaves and then cut it off at the stem and remove the leaves

Now here is where I am different from other folks: they suggest that you only dip the stem into a root stimulator while I recommend that you soak the stem overnight in a diluted mixture of root stimulator and water.

When you remove the stems from the root stimulator, stick it into a small pot of rich and moistened soil. You’ll want to bury the stem so that no bare part (where you removed the leaves) is seen.

Add a little more water and keep soil moist but not flooded. From here, just be patient because it’s going to take several weeks for the new leaves to sprout.

If you do decide to start with cuttings, a few of my favorite herbs to grow from cuttings include artemisia, basil, beebalm, lemon verbena and any of the mints..

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

Garden ornaments – No yard, front or back, is perfect without garden antiques.

In addition to being a beautiful decoration, garden antiques will make your yard more stylish and provide something people won’t quite be able to describe – but in a good way. You’ll be surprised at how envious your neighbors are when they see the effect garden antiques have on the aesthetics of your yard. The nice thing about garden antiques is that they don’t just have to be for decorative purposes only. If you’re yearning for function, find an antique wrought-iron garden bench, or an old crate that can be turned into a bench. Just be sure it can withstand the weight. Or maybe you’ll find that perfect old beaten pail for growing flowers in. The best part is that you can locate garden antiques in various designs, including traditional, elaborate, contemporary, and antique.

Everyone craves options, and with garden antiques, you’ll have more than you can handle! Antique desks

The most popular garden antiques can be old fashioned furniture – a great way to add some personal flare, and function, to your yard. This can’t help but make a significant impression in your yard. Your joy will rise when you are able to locate the antique that you know will go perfectly in your yard.

As you are looking for your antiques, you may be shocked to realize how many of the era specific garden antiques have an impact on the garden decoration available today. Did you know that Victorian garden furniture is considered to be a real asset and that the ornate benches and love seats are still much sought after even now?

Most of the garden antiques that you find will typically, especially when it comes to furniture like benches etc, involve specific patterns and even art forms. Your garden antique might be a resurrected piece of history. You and your friends could be lounging on the same garden furniture used by lords and ladies of the past – especially if it happens to be a heavy wooden piece. Most of that furniture was custom made and was very intricately carved. Antique chairs

If you succeed in finding something like that for your garden, bravo for you.

Even if you don’t find the next million-dollar antique bench from history, you’ll still be as happy with the hunt as the unexpected find itself. The great part is getting it home and discovering that it is a perfect counterpart for your yard, and the neighbors are hanging over the fence ogling.

Iron does fare better in foul weather, but at the end of the day it’s all about making your yard a reflection of you. If that means heavy wooden nobility, go for it. But iron’s ability to survive the elements does make for older, and thus more expensive, garden antiques.

So pick up your newspaper and start searching for those yard sales. You never know when or where you’ll find that perfect garden antique, just waiting to grace your yard.

For last two decades, the concept of greenhouse has been in the mainstream media. Although there are a number of greenhouses functioning in large scale in the word for a few decades now, we do not hear about them oftentimes as it used to be. This may be due to the fact that greenhouse concept has already got a stale subject matter or go green campaigns have become more bold in the green front. However, it is a common scenario of building a hydroponic greenhouse as this can be seen everywhere in the world.

Hydroponic greenhouse was first established to make sure that some of the tropical plants can be produced in non-tropical conditions. For this, an artificial container was built with tropical like environment where the greenhouse effect was used to keep the tropical temperature and humidness. Gravel is used as the medium for rooting in a hydroponic greenhouse. The gravel is supported with a lot of nutrition required for plants.

Sometimes, the nourishment might not be required all the time. There is an advanced irrigation system in such cases where the required nutrition is pumped periodically. Such custom method is called sub-irrigation culture . In a grand or commercial hydroponic greenhouse, every action after planting a seed is done through advanced mechanization. There are a number of sensors planted among the plants, so they can sense of something is short for the growth of the plants.

There are some rewards of a hydroponic greenhouse. First and foremost is the amount of harvest. The quantity usually becomes a few times of the conventional agriculture. Then, there is less harm for the harvest from insects and fungus due to the highly watched surroundings. Therefore, while the working cost being minimal, high return on the investment is gained.

Same as for anything else, hydroponic greenhouse has its own critics. There are some people who will not consume products of a hydroponic greenhouse. Principally this is due to the misconception and mix-up between the products created in a hydroponic greenhouse and genetic engineering. the fear of genetically engineered fruits and vegetables is one of the main fears associated with hydroponic greenhouse. Next is the chemical agriculture issue.

Compared to the orthodox agriculture, a hydroponic greenhouse will use large amounts of chemical for helping the growth and protecting the plants from harm. numerous individuals and organizations have seen this as unhealthy. Unlike traditional agriculture, products from a hydroponic greenhouse look cleaner and consistent. Hence, such products do have a good response in the supermarkets.

Besides hydroponic greenhouse related information, the author of this review has been published many other information, some of them are about product reviews.
